Personal Racialization Conversations

“One can give nothing whatever without giving oneself—that is to say, risking oneself.  If one cannot risk oneself, then one is simply incapable of giving.” ~ James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time

When your felt sense of a situation changes, you change -- and therefore, so does your life.~ Eugene Gendlin, Focusing

In order for people not to be chained by racism ideas, a force has to get them to unlearn those ideas. ~ Ibram X. Kendi

Personal Racialization Conversations are an invitation to explore how racialization has occurred in all people who identify as white generally and in you as a unique individual, holding belief that greater awareness and self-understanding expands compassion, imagination, and energy for the type of positive action that unites rather than divides.

Does the idea of having this kind of conversation feel bizarre, unnecessary, unorthodox, a little threatening, intrusive? Consider James Baldwins’ words about risk. Consider the risk Black and other people of color take every day, driving while Black, having a baby while Black, playing in the park while Black, walking home from the convenience store while Black.

These are not political conversations. Using a gentle, body-based questioning technique, I engage with Racialized as White (RAW) people from anywhere in the US, inviting memories, thoughts, feelings, and new questions to arise, the kinds of awarenesses that can release the stuck and uncomfortable places inside around race. Because these conversations can be lengthy, they are recorded for completeness and accuracy. The results of these conversations are confidentially compiled and reformulated for sharing on this website and through other media consistent with permissions obtained from those interviewed.

Exploring the content of your personal racialization can be transformative.
